Carola Answers Frequently Asked Questions

1. What kind of music do you play?
We play EVERY kind of music. Since we invite diversity, our music comes from all over the world, and since we're in Austin "the live music capitol of the world", we also support our local musicians.

2. What do people wear?
Whatever you want to sweat in! Comfy clothes to move, stretch, roll around on the floor kinda clothes.

3. What age group comes to Body Choir?
Gee! Our ages range from eighty-five years old to new-born babies!

4. How physically fit do I have to be?
The most important body awareness to have is the ability to breathe, relax, and be present in your body. The diversity of mobility ranges from a gentleman in a wheelchair, a woman born with a hip displacement, and a blind person. We also have people who have had chronic injuries come to dance and find out the movement actually helps them in recovering. What we hear dance after dance is how many acquire ease and grace in their movement that they never dreamed is possible.

5. Do I need dance experience?
No! And probably if you do, you'll want to "lose it" so you can find new and different ways to express yourself!

6. How many people typically show up?
In Austin, we generally have 60-100 people. In Sante Fe, the average population is probably 35-45 people at any given dance.

7. Exactly what happens, do you sing?
Sometimes! Since we encourage self-expression. Rather than singing a song, you might hear someone laughing, crying... expressing how he or she feels in the present moment. Isn't that how lyrics come about to create a song?

8. Are there any "rules"?
There are guidelines for creating a "safe" container to express freely without judgment. We are Non-verbal, Barefoot, Maintain our own boundaries, Keep our eyes open Move freely and at our own pace.

9. What kind of rituals or structure is there?
Probably the earliest form of prayer is movement. Tribes came together to celebrate birth, death, and rites of passage using movement and sound to create a peaceful, loving community.
